Political Dimorphism

February 2nd, 2008

Should I vote Republican or Democrat? Well, I’m pretty disgusted by both parties. I am not impressed by the “third” parties. So, here is a list of my positions, for anyone (most likely no-one) who cares:

Education:

  • For teaching Evolution in schools
  • Against NCLB “No Child Left Behind”
  • Against federal testing in schools
  • For charter schools
  • For state/local control of schools
  • Do-not-care about school prayer! This should be a local decision.

Military:

  • For a strong military
  • For measures to protect air travel (I can deal with the liquids ban)
  • Against ubiquitous surveillance
  • Wish we never went to Iraq

Economy

  • “Free Trade” is a double-edged sword
  • For low taxes for middle/lower classes
  • Against tax breaks for large companies
  • For low taxes on corporations in general

Immigration:

  • Against limitless immigration
  • For amnesty for working immigrants.

Social Issues:

  • For the rights to “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”
  • Against abortion (should be state issue)
  • For gay marriage (should be state issue)
  • Against capital punishment

Gambling, National Security, and Other Intrinsically Related Issues

November 13th, 2007

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was passed last year as an addendum to the Port Security Act in the United States. While I personally believe that the UIGEA is poorly conceived and inconsistent, the particular law is not the most important issue here. In the USA, there is a long history of minor laws, acts, regulations, etc being tacked onto completely unrelated bills. A congressperson who believes in the importance of a bill like the Port Security Act can only vote for or against. That means, supporting the Port Security Act means that person must also support the UIGEA. Usually the addendum gets much less attention, but is nevertheless a drain on federal resources and possibly on our freedoms.

Welcome to Cynic’s Report

November 11th, 2007

Cynic’s Report is a outlet for those that don’t believe everything that they hear. Journalists, politicians, and salespersons are filling our head with noise from dawn until dusk. Most seem to accept their drivel passively. We are the exception.
